What they make

Maple Valley Maple Products is a sixth-generation family farm in Homeworth, Ohio, that has recently expanded into maple syrup. It taps about 900 trees, and sap is made into syrup by hand in an on-farm sugar house using an oil-fired evaporator and reverse osmosis. Products include maple syrup, granulated maple sugar, maple cream, maple candy and maple-glazed nuts. Items are sold online and by pick-up appointment at the farm, and sugar house tours are offered by appointment.

Why Ohio honey and maple taste like Ohio

Ohio maple syrup

Maple syrup is a late-winter crop. Sap runs when nights freeze and days warm up to around 40°F, and collection ends in late March or early April, just before the buds open. That short window is why every bottle is a small batch.

Geauga County, in the northeast corner of the state, is known for its Maple Festival, and about a fifth of its residents are Amish, a community with a long tradition of sugaring.

Why is real maple syrup expensive?

Because of the ratio: it takes roughly 43 to 50 gallons of sugar maple sap to boil down to one gallon of syrup, and the season only lasts a few weeks.

When is maple syrup season in Ohio?

Late winter into early spring. Most tapping happens before Presidents' Day, and the run ends in late March or early April when the buds swell.
