What they make

Campbell's Sweets Factory is a Cleveland popcorn and sweets maker. Jeff Campbell founded it as a stall at the West Side Market in 2004, later joined by his wife Lynn, and it grew to include an Ohio City store and bakery. In 2020 Cleveland candy wholesaler b.a.Sweetie Candy Company bought its assets. The company makes small-batch flavored popcorn in over 20 flavors, hand-dipped chocolates and caramel apples, including an Ohio-themed Buckeye Apple. A West Side Market shop remains, and online orders are offered.

The Ohio candy with a tree behind it

The Ohio buckeye

A buckeye is peanut butter fudge rolled into a ball and dipped in milk chocolate, leaving a circle of peanut butter showing. The dip is the point: it makes the candy look like the shiny brown nut of the Ohio buckeye, the state tree.

The modern recipe is credited to Ohio resident Gail Tabor, who made it in 1964 after her husband said the half-dipped candy looked like a buckeye nut. It was printed in the Ohio State Alumni Magazine in 1973 and is now closely tied to Ohio State football.

What is an Ohio buckeye?

A peanut butter fudge ball, partly dipped in milk chocolate so the center shows. It is named after the nut of the Ohio buckeye tree, which is poisonous and not edible.

Is a buckeye candy made with real buckeyes?

No. The candy only imitates the look of the nut. The nut itself is poisonous.
