The Cleveland Caramel Corn Co. is a family business run by Pam McClain with her parents and extended family, built on a caramel corn recipe from her grandmother and aunt. It began producing at Cleveland Culinary Launch + Kitchen in May 2018 and opened a retail shop and production facility at 7541 Pearl Road, Middleburg Heights, in November 2019. The popcorn is made with real butter and comes in more than 100 sweet and savory flavors. It is sold in the shop, at several other retailers, and by shipped order.

The Ohio buckeye

A buckeye is peanut butter fudge rolled into a ball and dipped in milk chocolate, leaving a circle of peanut butter showing. The dip is the point: it makes the candy look like the shiny brown nut of the Ohio buckeye, the state tree.

The modern recipe is credited to Ohio resident Gail Tabor, who made it in 1964 after her husband said the half-dipped candy looked like a buckeye nut. It was printed in the Ohio State Alumni Magazine in 1973 and is now closely tied to Ohio State football.

What is an Ohio buckeye?

A peanut butter fudge ball, partly dipped in milk chocolate so the center shows. It is named after the nut of the Ohio buckeye tree, which is poisonous and not edible.

Is a buckeye candy made with real buckeyes?
