Conn's Potato Chip Company

Conn's Potato Chip Co.

What they make

Conn's Potato Chip Co. is a Zanesville, Ohio chip maker established in 1935, when Ida Conn began making potato chips. The company says its chips use potatoes, cooking oil, seasoning and salt, and describes its products as homegrown in Ohio. Flavors have included Wavy Style, Green Onion, Bar-B-Q and Salt & Vinegar. A Conn's subsidiary obtained a license to the Mikesell's brand, moving that production to Zanesville. Distribution is strongest in central, southeastern and northern Ohio, with online sales at connschips.com.

The Ohio candy with a tree behind it

The Ohio buckeye

A buckeye is peanut butter fudge rolled into a ball and dipped in milk chocolate, leaving a circle of peanut butter showing. The dip is the point: it makes the candy look like the shiny brown nut of the Ohio buckeye, the state tree.

The modern recipe is credited to Ohio resident Gail Tabor, who made it in 1964 after her husband said the half-dipped candy looked like a buckeye nut. It was printed in the Ohio State Alumni Magazine in 1973 and is now closely tied to Ohio State football.

What is an Ohio buckeye?

A peanut butter fudge ball, partly dipped in milk chocolate so the center shows. It is named after the nut of the Ohio buckeye tree, which is poisonous and not edible.

Is a buckeye candy made with real buckeyes?

No. The candy only imitates the look of the nut. The nut itself is poisonous.
